European Super League - Power to the players!
The last 24-48 hours of international/European football have been some of the most exciting since... (take your pick from some of the great World Cup, Champion's League or some other international competition). I am fascinated by the talk that this is a bad idea, that it shouldn't happen and that people won't support their clubs anymore. I am wondering why?
The clubs that are looking to set up this league are the dominant ones in their respective countries. Over the last 20 years only 1 club from England, Italy and Spain has managed to win a title other than those clubs joining the Super League (and actually for Italy it wasn't even a club but simply a vacated title in the 2004/5 season). Of the other major soccer leagues in Europe, France and Germany have not opted to join yet. Interestingly those two countries have had a bit more variety at the top in the last 2 decades (although in the last 10 years those countries have been dominated by PSG in France and Bayern in Germany).
What is so bad about this proposal? I see many benefits:
- the best teams in Europe get to play against each other on a consistent basis and create a more robust competition.
- the second tier clubs in each country can then compete for their respective country championships whereas now they are basically shut out.
- although details are sketchy, there seems to be some ability for clubs to get promoted to this Super League (it appears that there will be 15 permanent members and 5 clubs that change periodically).
- the structure of the season - where each team plays the others in their groups in order to determine top seedings, with a 2nd half of the season transitioning to a playoff format - is a tried and tested method in US sports that works extremely well.
- And finally, in Europe where workers have much more power relative to their employers than in other parts of the world, the players would get to wrestle away some power from the owners through a more lucrative revenue sharing plan.
As of now, I'm all for this but I'm open to hearing the argument against it. So far it seems like tradition is the key point and as we know, doing things just because they have been done a certain way for so long is often not the appropriate answer.
