A wonderful sporting weekend ...21 predictions as we prepare to enjoy many more great moments this summer.

What an amazing sporting weekend. Just to think that a year ago virtually all sporting events, leagues, and competitions had been shut down, cancelled with little to no visibility as to when they would be back on. Fast forward to today and we have had the oldest major golf champion ever, a 17 year old tennis champ, the first playoff appearance by the NY Knicks since 2013 (special mention to the Phoenix Suns who played in the post-season after a 10 year draught), and championship Sunday for the EPL with Liverpool and Chelsea locking up the final 2 champion's league spots (special mention to the French Ligue 1 crowning a new champ in Lille as PSG fell to number 2). This is great. You know what else is great, being able to attend a wonderful LAFC match (possibly the best sporting experience in all of LA):


Time to look ahead. Here are 21 fearless predictions and surprises for the sporting events due to take place in the months ahead (in no particular order with most coming from my heart rather than scientific evidence):
  1. The Nets will win the NBA championship.
  2. The Clippers will go as far or further than the Lakers in the playoffs.
  3. The TB Lightning will repeat as NHL champions.
  4. Colorado will make the NHL finals losing less than 2 matches en route there.
  5. Nadal will win yet another Roland Garros.
  6. Roger Federer will go as far, or farther, than Djokovic at Wimbledon.
  7. Serena Williams won't make it to the 2nd week of either Roland Garros or Wimbledon.
  8. Chelsea will win the Champions League final, beating Man City for the 2nd time in May.
  9. France will win Euro 2020.
  10. The LAFC will end up with a better record than the LA Galaxy.
  11. No country will win more than 100 medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (the USA and/or China have won at least that amount since Athens 2004).
  12. Simone Biles will win the olympic all around gold medal.
  13. J Rahm will win either the US Open or British Open.
  14. Phil Mickelson will miss the cut at one or both of those majors.
  15. The winner of the AL East (either Boston, NY or Tampa) will end up winning the World Series.
  16. The Dodgers will end up with the best record in the MLB this season.
  17. The Buccaneers will enter their Week 4 NE showdown undefeated and depart the same way.
  18. Miami Dolphins will exit September without a win under their belts.
  19. The Pac 12 will finally get a team into the NCAA Football playoffs
  20. Duke basketball will underperform again without making the NCAA tournament for a second year running.
  21. I will be lucky to get 50% or more of these correct!

20+ years of tennis ended today (goodbye Fed, Serena, Murray and Nadal)... It's the Djokovic show from here on in...

  You read that right, a 6-0 set inflicted on Federer, the man who has won the most Wimbledon singles titles (of course the great Navratilova holds the all time record with 9 singles titles), and who has not lost here in straight sets since 2002. This simply marks the last domino to fall of the greats leaving the stage with a whimper, rather than a bang. Let's recap: Nadal didn't even play the tournament this year. He felt he needed more time to recuperate after a full clay court season and as such withdrew both from Wimbledon and the Olympics in order to "focus on looking at the mid and long term." Of course that is sensible, but with Djokovic one win away from his Major total, London being a short train ride away from Paris, this does strike me as a little strange. Not to mention that Novak beat him in Paris less than a month ago, it does seem that the Nadal challenge is slowly coming to an end; Andy Murray who is often described as a member of the big 4 in men'...

Importance to have a work buddy... Lessons from the trenches!

For the past 13 months we have been working from home. Over the past few weeks my school has dabbled with in person teaching and that has brought on its own set of challenges as well. But one constant throughout this whole ordeal has been the fact that I have had a core group of work friends who have helped bring some levity when things got rough and some perspective when things seemed to be spiraling out of control. Within my math department it's nice to have colleagues who are always there to help out and pick each other up when things seemed dazed and confused, first on the transition from in person teaching to remote and now on the re-entry to in person teaching albeit in a hybrid form. Adapting lessons and assignments from the "old school" paper format to the much more eco-friendly and XXIst century electronic format took some major teamwork.
