Top 5 podcasts to increase your financial literacy...

I often get asked what are the best places to learn about the financial markets. As driving with traffic is a competitive sport here in LA, listening to podcasts is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. You get to pass some time and learn a thing or two along the way. As such over the past few years I have built up a nice little portfolio of daily and weekly downloads which I listen to on a regular basis. The topics they cover are varied and allow me to listen to different types of stories depending on my mood. In this post I will focus on the business related ones, as that is one of the most frequent questions I get asked by students, parents and friends. Without further ado, here goes:

1. Motley Fool Money (https://www.fool.com/podcasts/motley-fool-money/)

This podcast comes out after the market close every Friday and incorporates a market recap, the top stories of the week, interviews and stock picks. It is a bite-sized 35-40 weekly episode, easily digestible, and giving you a wonderful place to start looking for new investment opportunities.

2. The Indicator from Planet Money (https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510325/the-indicator-from-planet-money)

This is a daily 10 minute podcast that comes out 5 days a week. It requires a bit more of a commitment, but is a great look into the key economic/financial data of the day. There is a nice educational component to this podcast and within a few months you will be well up to date on the most important numbers that can impact the market and help you make sense of the economy.

3. Money Talks from Economist Radio (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/money-talks-from-economist-radio/id420929545)

They say that you can get a college level education by reading the Wall Street Journal and the Economist Magazine on a regular basis. One way to jumpstart that process (for you high school students out there) or to maintain your skills (for you college graduates), is to listen to this 25 minute that comes out every Tuesday. This podcast generally takes the top 3 stories that appear in the Economist Magazine and delves into them. Occasionally they may have an episode dedicated to one topic instead, but overall you get a great global view (which differs quite a bit from the previous 2 recommendations which are largely US focused).

4. How I Built This with Guy Raz (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/money-talks-from-economist-radio/id420929545)

This is a slightly different type of podcast. It is not tied into the story of the day/week/month. Rather it scratches the entrepreneur itch. Episodes come out once or twice a week and are an in-depth interview with a company founder exploring the ups and downs of how the individual/team came up with the original concept, raised the necessary capital and eventually succeeded in leaving a mark on the world.

5. Unchained Podcast (https://unchainedpodcast.com/)

No financial literacy would be complete without a peek into the crypto news and industry. Laura Shin has been covering the space for the past 6 years and has access to some of the key players in the industry. There are two podcasts in this series, Unchained and Unconfirmed. These podcasts come out twice a week and are a mix of interviews, news and other insights. There is a daily email newsletter that one can subscribe to as well in order to get even more crypto information.

This list is by no means complete and there are many other wonderful podcasts that one can/should listen to on a regular basis. However I believe that these are a great place to start. What do you think and if you have any that you really enjoy, please let me know and we can make a top 10 list in a future blog post.

Enjoy!
